COMPONENTCOMPOSITION LIQUID WALLPAPER
There are three types of liquid wallpaper on sale and each has its own characteristics. Therefore, I recommend reading the brief characteristics of all.
Cellulose wallpaper contain wood fibers and even pieces of bark. This economical type of wallpaper is ideal for “problem” rooms: where there is no heating or the walls are covered with microcracks. Minus one – burn out…
Cotton wallpaper – it is almost pure cotton and only 2% of impurities in the form of decorative components (mica) and a binder. The surface to the touch is about the same as natural fabric: soft, pleasant, warm … and a little easily soiled.
Silk wallpaper on the wall are characterized by a satin sheen. This is the most expensive segment on the liquid wallpaper market, but it also lasts longer than other types, while not fading. This type of coating is only suitable for smooth (without cracks) walls, since a thin layer will not hide surface defects.
A combined composition of a mixture of cellulose and silk is also on sale, which makes liquid wallpaper more versatile and affordable.
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
The surface of the walls does not need to be sanded – a layer of liquid wallpaper will hide all the roughness. The substrate must be dry and clean before finishing.
If the walls are concrete, already plastered (including clay plaster) or fresh plasterboard, they are prepared as follows: they are covered with acrylic primer, treated with starting putty (gypsum board can also be finished), primed again.
IMPORTANT: the primer should be acrylic and white (colorless).
If the surface wooden (timber, plywood, chipboard, fiberboard, OSB) or metal (pipes), then it must be covered with white alkyd enamel. Liquid wallpaper is applied to a dried surface.
NUANCE: no remnants of old wallpaper or whitewash – only the types of pre-finishing listed above.
APPLICATION TECHNOLOGY
Liquid wallpaper begins to prepare on the eve of application (in the evening).
Water is poured into a clean construction bucket (according to the proportions indicated by the manufacturer).
The dry component of liquid wallpaper is poured into the water.
Mix thoroughly by hand.
The mixture is left for 8 hours so that the fibers swell and are evenly saturated with moisture.
Before starting work, liquid wallpaper is once again thoroughly mixed by hand.
Part of the composition is applied with a spatula on a construction grater and distributed over the wall in an even layer.
HOW TO CHANGE THE COLOR LIQUID WALLPAPER
There are a lot of tips on the Internet for changing the color scheme of the basic colors, however, I recommend that before using them, make a trial application on a surface of at least 1 m2.
Option one: add pigment for acrylic paint to the wallpaper solution.
Manufacturers are categorically against such “barbarism”. Because they dye the fibers from the inside, and the pigment will do it from the outside. So the result can be unpredictable.
Option two: mix two colors of wallpaper with each other in certain proportions.
IMPORTANT: liquid wallpaper must be from the same manufacturer and from the same collection. Otherwise, the binding components may react and unpleasantly “surprise” …
Option three: add colored glitter (sparkles from colored mica) to the liquid composition. A shimmering sheen will appear on the finished wall, but a dramatic change in color can only be achieved with a very large amount of glitter, which can affect the quality of the final product.
NUANCE: if the test is successful, then it is recommended to prepare the liquid composition in such an amount that is sufficient to decorate the walls of one room. Otherwise, discrepancies in tone may appear, which the interior definitely does not paint.
CONSUMPTION OF LIQUID WALLPAPER
This topic is the most lengthy … the fact is that it is difficult to set an exact amount in advance for three reasons:
- the pro will make the layer thinner, saving up to 20%,
- the sprayer will reduce material consumption by 10-15%,
- non-compliance with the proportions declared by the manufacturer, namely, a composition that is too thick will increase consumption in an unpredictable amount.
It is generally accepted that one bag of dry composition of liquid wallpaper is enough to cover 4-5 m2.
Thus, knowing the exact area of \u200b\u200bthe walls (minus the openings), one can also calculate the flow rate.
Builders think like this: the area is divided by 4. The result is the desired number of bags (kilograms).
If the work is done by a pro, then 5% is added to the result (just in case).
If you apply the wallpaper yourself, feel free to add all 20%.
REPAIR OF INDIVIDUAL AREAS AND DISMANTLING OF LIQUID WALLPAPER
Everything is simple here: to remove liquid wallpaper it is enough to roll them properly with a roller generously dipped in water. When the fibers are saturated, the wallpaper mass is removed with a spatula.
For restoration damaged area, soak only it (you can first make a cut of the desired size with a clerical knife).
After removing the damaged part, the patch is dried, primed and covered with a layer of new wallpaper (in fact, this is why it is recommended to leave a small amount of dry mix after repair).
